Silver Under the Skin moves from extraction—mining, labor, value—into an underground realm where queer bodies, forgotten voices, and collective memory resurface. Drawing on histories of silver circulation, three drag performers shift between workers, mediums, and future beings in a techno-driven choreography of voice and trance. The work imagines an underground commune: a space beyond productivity, where value is no longer extracted but shared—through presence, listening, and collective dreaming.

Silver Under the Skin consists of a video installation and performance. A sculptural assemblage made from silver-like cutlery—objects associated with domesticity but also western indentity—are reconfigured and bent. Alongside this, a linocut print depicts a scene from the historical silver mine – Iwami Ginzan – crucial in shaping Japan’s economy and in a global trade.
The exhibition is activated at the opening through a live performance by three drag kings in the form of karaoke with a live DJ set. The performers inhabit and distort narrations of masculinity, labor, and authority. Video feature, amongst the other, images of Japanese currency, when Japan shifted from rice based economy to monetization; silver currency, which first was weighed then counted.
Drawing on imagery of mines, and the subterranean as an unconscious space, the work ultimately imagines a speculative commune which emerges beneath the surface, where care, listening, and shared time is valued more than productivity.
