ICHIGOICHIE is an exhibition following Parinot Kunakornwong’s stay at the Art Center Ongoing residency. It is also his debut exhibition in Japan. The exhibition examines the transient, fragile moments in daily life and how one navigates and connects coincidences and chances through the act of making. As a foreigner in Japan, there is a significant communication gap, which can place one in a child-like state, relying heavily on help from others. The exhibition also proposes the fleeting nature and performative aspects of the concept ichi-go ichi-e.
On the first day, after discussing ceramic practice with Nozomu Ogawa, Kunakornwong went to the supermarket to buy a coffee cup and other essentials. He purchased a coffee cup with the words “Bonne Chance” printed on it. Unexpectedly, the next morning, a part of the filling in his tooth cracked after breakfast. He ignored it and tried to find a laundrette, but instead, he discovered Youkobo Artspace and was surprised to find that it was a lithography printing workshop run by Satoru Itazu. A few days later, Ogawa took him to a dentist and helped him communicate. The treatment required making a mold of part of his tooth while placing a temporary filling.
At that moment, the cultural exchange became physical. Japan became a part of his body, as well as the air, the food, and the nonstop experiences he inhaled. There is a strange connection between these three incidents during the first few days: the broken tooth, the lithography studio, and the ceramic practice—each needs to be considered together.   In both ceramic and lithography practices, there is an important element of chance. One can never know if the outcome will align with the initial intention, just as Kunakornwong’s approach to making objects celebrates serendipity.
